The Rural Development Department and Panchayati Raj (RDD&PR) of Jammu & Kashmir has dismissed recent social media rumors claiming changes in the eligibility criteria for Sarpanch candidates in the Union Territory.
A viral post falsely suggested that the government had introduced new qualifications for Sarpanch aspirants under the "J&K Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, Section 6, 2022." The post alleged that candidates must now be permanent residents of J&K, at least 25 years old, and possess a minimum educational qualification of 12th pass, among other conditions.
The Department has firmly refuted these claims, labeling the information as baseless and fabricated.
According to the RDD&PR, no new notification has been issued, and the existing eligibility criteria outlined in the J&K Panchayati Raj Act of 1989 remain unchanged. They also stressed that any official amendments would be communicated through proper channels and urged the public not to trust unverified social media reports spreading misinformation.
