In an official notification dated 10th October 2024, the Election Commission of India announced the lifting of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the successful completion of the General Elections to the Legislative Assemblies of the State of Haryana and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Model Code of Conduct, which came into force at the time of the announcement of the election schedule, is a crucial guideline ensuring the integrity of the election process. It regulates the conduct of political parties and candidates, ensuring free and fair elections by preventing misuse of power or influence.
With the results now declared in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, the MCC is no longer in effect. This development allows for the normal functioning of government activities, which had been under the restrictions imposed by the MCC during the election period.
The notification has been sent to key government officials, including the Cabinet Secretary, Chief Secretaries, and Chief Electoral Officers of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, for further dissemination.
The timely conclusion of the elections marks a significant step in the democratic process, as both regions prepare to move forward with their newly elected legislative bodies.
